Why is it called Flat Harry's ?
Cris was christened with that nickname by his old MTB race team pals in the Peak District, where he became notorious not only for always owning the flashier specs of bikes and wearing bling kit (i.e. initially Flash Harry) but mainly for putting the hammer down as soon as his tyres hit a flat stretch of tarmac, and his teammates would shout from the back, “oi, tell that Flat Harry to knock it down a gear!" - the name stuck and felt perfect for our unique shop name.

Introducing our FlatHary's team
Cris: Business Owner, BikeFitting, Custom Builds & Workshop QC: an Engineer at heart, Cris worked as a Saturday boy in his local bike shop in the 1980's whilst studying Engineering at Brunel, had great fun for more than two decades in corporate life at AstraZeneca, but had an itch to scratch - to open his own cycle shop, which he’d vowed to do by his 40th birthday. He may have been a couple of years late on that plan, but he never the less opened FlatHarry’s in July 2015 and is loving the fact he is hands on and applying his skills and knowledge built up from decades of involvement the sport and pastime of cycling. Cris has a painfully inquisitive nature (always needing to understand how things work) and this has meant he has spent his decades studying how the the human body and bicycle best adapt to each other to enable the best of comfort, power and aerodynamics. Now from his own understanding he is appreciating how ageing athletes have to modify long held understandings of how body and machine best work together. with an impressive cycling pedigree of four decades of road and cross country mountain bike racing, daily commuting, bike-packing and the joys parenting. This means he’s well informed to help you get the most out of your cycling, or simply pass on great advice on how to help children build self confidence to master the art of riding a bike, without the need for stabilisers.
Meghan: General Manager: Meg joined us when we expanded and moved to Lower Mount Farm in 2021, previously from a highly respected family bike shop in Reading, Meg runs Flat Harry's, she's the stock controller, buyer and runs our front of house operation. Meg has lived bike shops all her life, and knows everyone in the industry, we depend on her for her extensive knowledge of the suppliers as well as her organisation skills and energy to keep the wheels on our business.
Rob: Workshop Manager: Rob joined us in 2020 as a keen apprentice, looking for a change in career from his corporate life in Financial & Tax advise with Ernst & Young. Rob quickly threw himself in to his formal Cytech Apprenticeship and learnt the ropes both on the job and through the Cytech training route, where he quickly progressed through Level 2 and Level 3 certification. since then he's lead the workshop team in gaining Shimano Service Centre accreditation, and manages the workshop mechanics and their workload.
Konrad: Mechanic: Konrad joined us in 2024 after years running warehouses, he wanted a change in vocation, his passion is making things work, and has been a keen cyclist all his life. Originally from Poland, Konrad brings his unique energy to the workshop with his can do attitude and his love for learning. Every day is a learning day in the workshop, and Konrad is hungry for it.
Dave: Senior Mechanic: Dave has been with us since mid-September 2019. A local Cookham resident and keen cyclists for many years, being an active member of the local Marlow Riders cycling club. Dave wanted a change in career. Having cut his teeth in the very detail oriented world of printing, where he worked very successfully since leaving school, he witnessed the transformation of that industry from the days of lithographic print, through to the modern inkjet & lazerjet technologies and beyond. his mastery of the associated software systems to refine images and layout hardcopy is remarkably transferable a skill-set, due to the necessary attention to detail, needed to master the art of modern bicycle mechanics. Dave has quickly become our go-to man for all things hydraulic related.. some people just do brake bleeds and fork servicing with ease... Dave is a proper bleeder.
Amelia: Trainee Mechanic: Amelia joined us during the summer of 2024, initially as part of a work placement, and since then during term holidays, Amelia quickly impressed the workshop team with her willingness to get involved and to learn fast whilst handling customers bikes with the due care and attention they need. Amelia is a seasoned road racer, she rides for team OnForm-BrotherUK, and anyone who's experienced riding with her knows she produces impressive watts from such a small frame speeding like a demon up the hills and enjoying mixing it on the continental scene, coming back from spring classics cobbles with a smile, some scars and many stories to tell. We hope she continues to help out when she gets time off from her next adventures at University, and we know that her long held desire to race with the best at the Tour de France Femmes is seriously in her grasp if she wants it.
